Parish & Ward Church of St. Botolph without Bishopsgate

St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate ADVENT & CHRISTMAS CHARITIES 2014

Alms given and collections taken during Advent and at Carol Services are divided between the church’s chosen charities, which this year include two with a London focus, Maytree and Hope in Tottenham, and two with an international remit, the Bible Society's China Appeal and the Haiti Hospital Appeal. More information about the charities can be found opposite.
Please give generously, and please complete a Gift Aid envelope if you can.

Maytree

Maytree provides a refuge for, among others, City workers who have reached the desperation of the suicidal, and helps nurse them back from the edge in a safe and supported residential context. The Maytree Suicide Respite Centre in North London is the only place of its kind in the UK, and fills a gap in services between the medical support of the NHS and the helplines and drop-in centres of the voluntary sector. In November 2014 Maytree had their City Launch in our Church Hall and they are very worthy of support.

Hope in Tottenham

Hope in Tottenham is a community based local charity that has been established to serve the needs of children and young adults in the London Borough of Haringey. The organisation is based on Christian values and through a variety of targeted programmes works in areas of social deprivation to bring support, advice and above all hope, to communities where social cohesion and aspiration may have become fragmented. The charity is already working closely with our mission community (St Francis at the Engine Room) in Tottenham Hale. Your donations will go towards their new youth mentor programmes.

Bible Society China Appeal

Bible Society China Appeal: the Bible Society (of which Bishop of London is President) has launched an campaign to provide paper for 3.5 million Bibles for use in China. With Chinese people turning to Christianity at a rate of around half a million per year, demand for Bibles is outstripping supply and millions of new Christians are waiting to get a copy. There are now Bible production facilities in China that can produce finished Bibles at a rate of 75 per minute–but to keep these presses running, the Society needs lots of paper! The cost of the paper for each bible is 80p.

Haiti Hospital Appeal

Haiti Hospital Appeal: the people of Haiti are still in great difficulties following the catastrophic earthquake of 2010, despite the world’s media having moved on. Wesley’s Chapel, our local Methodist Church on City Road, and its minister Lord Griffiths, are deeply engaged with Christian social programmes in Haiti, and we are working with them to support the community. With your donations we hope to support the maternity unit at a leading hospital in North Haiti: Haiti has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the Western Hemisphere, and the unit tackles this with specialist care and education.
